What are ratchet straps?

Also referred to as a load or cargo strap, ratchet straps are durable, load-bearing strapping used to safely secure cargo during transport. The strapping is commonly made from abrasion-resistant polyester webbing and is available in a range of lengths and widths to suit requirements.

Ratchet strap types

An extremely effective and safe method of securing cargo for transport, the ratchet strap is available in several types. Hardwearing and resistant to abrasion, the strapping is firmly secured by the ratchet teeth to ensure a strong and reliable hold.

Double hook   -   This type features two separate straps, one plain with a hook at the end, while the other, shorter strap features a hook at one end and a ratchet unit at the other. The hooks are secured to the transport vehicle, while the longer strap loops around the cargo and through the ratchet to create tension

Plain end   -   This is a single strap with a ratchet unit located at one end. The strap is looped around the cargo and threaded through the ratchet to create tension and a secure hold

Clawhook   -   Supplied as two separate components, this type of ratchet strap is similar to the double hook. The difference is that the ratchet unit features an integrated hook and no strap, which allows the ratchet to be attached directly to the loading vehicle for easier operator access

Considerations when choosing ratchet straps

Length - ensure you get repeated use out of your ratchet strap by going for a longer length than you think you need. Choose your dimensions based on the cargo size most frequently transported and then add a little to that figure.

Load capacity - while these straps are load-bearing and extremely durable, it's important that you check the technical documents for the load capacity figures and the minimum breakage figures to ensure your cargo doesn't end up in the middle of the road.

Type - you'll probably end up with multiple types of ratchet straps in the end, but your first purchase should reflect the application you need. For bundling products together choose a single-end strap, while a double hook strap is best for securing cargo to lorries and trailers.

Ratchet strap jargon buster

To make our range of ratchet straps easy to shop, we've put together some general information on the quality standard that should be found on all ratchet straps used for the transportation of goods.

What does standard EN 12195-2:2000 mean?

EN 12195-2:2000 outlines the safety requirements and testing of the man-made materials used to lash and restrain cargo onto trucks and trailers for transportation purposes.

Let's break it down...

• EN - This is the current European standard.

• 12195 - This is the legislation number used to identify the published document.

• 2 - This identifies part 2 of the document that addresses ratchet straps.

• 2000 - This is the year the standard was confirmed and published.

FAQs

How do you thread a ratchet strap?

Place the end of the strap through the mandrel, then double it over and pull it back through over the manual pawl. Pull out any excess slack, then crank the ratchet a couple of times to create the desired tension and secure the strap into the ratchet mechanism

How do you use a ratchet strap without a hook?

Single-end ratchet straps are designed for bundling cargo together, for example, securing products onto a pallet. The ratchet mechanism is placed at the top, while the strap is wrapped around the two items before threading into the manual pawl. The ratchet is then cranked until the desired tension has been achieved.
