What are spot drills?

Spot drills are a type of drill bit used in machining deep holes. They tend to be used to create accurate hole locations and to create a recess in deep drilling applications where a twist drill might have a tendency to wander off centre.

They are mostly made of either high-speed steel of carbide, high speed steel is recommended for softer materials whereas carbide works well for harder materials.

Types of spot drill

• High speed steel - Spot drills manufactured from HSS are durable and have a good tool lifespan. They are mostly ideal for cutting softer materials.

• Carbide - Carbide spotting drills are ideal for creating recesses in hard metals such as tooling steels. Their cutting surface is highly resistant to wear.

Considerations when choosing a spot drill

A spotting drill should have a slightly larger point angle than your drill as if not this can cause damage due to shock loading. The thicker sorter design of the spot drill enables short chip formation, and the tip geometry is better suited to drilling a shallow hole.
